The Freedom Ranger day-old chicks are hatched in the heart of the Pennsylvania Dutch Country. The breeding stock is imported from the regions of Burgundy and Brittany (France). The genetic stock is derived from the American and European old heritage breed of chicken and was developed in the early 1960’s to meet the highest standards of the French Label Rouge Free Range program. Currently, the Freedom Ranger genetic stock is used by most non-factory farm production models (alternative) all across Europe and also by small pastured poultry producers in search of a traditionally raised farm chicken - just like the "oldies", healthy and with a succulent flavor and texture.

Since our Freedom Ranger Broilers are a slower growing breed, they are naturally better suited to the higher welfare and all true natural rearing systems (full pasturing, free range, organic, certified, backyard etc.…). In the United States most modern poultry industrial production models use fast growing breeds (hybrid white synthetic Cornish crosses).

Natural instinct and behavior is preserved in the selection and growing methods of our Freedom Ranger breeding stock. It goes without saying that our birds love foraging in pastures, free ranging outside, always looking for natural sunlight and fresh air, as well as ground scratching and dust bathing.

At J. M. Hatchery Inc. we strongly believe in traditional, sustainable, and environmentally friendly farming methods, and we are convinced that allowing the chickens to do what comes naturally ensures an incredible meal for your table!

Our current assortment of Freedom Ranger day-old chicks is made of:

Breed

Performance goals under true natural rearing systems:
Based on the results and experiences of our own flocks and our customers’ flocks, the Freedom Ranger assortment will reach 5 to 6 LBS Live Weight in a minimum of 9 weeks and a maximum of 11 weeks. In no way does this data constitute a warranty or guarantee of the same performance as conditions of nutrition, management, health, density or physical and biological environments (weather and relief) vary from producers to producers.

When you order Freedom Ranger chicks, you will receive a random assortment of all in stock varieties mentioned above. We cannot separate by line at hatching, so please do not request specific counts of a particular line of chicks.

Chicks are hatched every week of the year.

NOTICE:
Due to the overwhelming popularity and increased sales of the Freedom Rangers, we are happy to announce that we have transferred sales of the Freedom Rangers to our son-in-law, Kendall Fox.  You will continue to receive the same quality chick that you've always gotten in the past because JM Hatchery will continue to maintain the breeding flocks and manage the egg production that produce these fine chicks.
Kendall has already done an excellent job hatching these birds for us at his facility for the past three years and we are now simply tranferring the sales management to him.  Therefore, for availability, information, and order placement, please contact him or go directly to his website at www.freedomrangerhatchery.com.

OUTSTANDING
"Excellent birds & great customer service!!! I'm not one to give praise when undeserved, but we are sold on J.M. Hatchery. We ordered 100 colored chickens, 15 guinea, 15 muscovy, & 15 campbells. Out of all those we lost only one chick and that was after there was a mistake with the post office and the chicks were an extra day with the post office. We'll have to post after processing the birds in order to report more."

very pleased with these chicks!
"We ordered 100 of these last summer and were very pleased with the end result. We free-ranged all day from 4 weeks on, with supplemental feed only at night. They happily forgaed just like any other chicken. Butchered most at 11 weeks, average dressed weight was 4.5 pounds, with some monsters well over 6 pounds. All were still fully feathered and beautiful, unlike the bald, nasty looking cornish broilers. Kept a few back for our flock and they have been decent layers, laying usually every other day, calm, friendly, easy to manage chickens. We kept one rooster who is now nearing a year old and when last weighed a few months ago, was 16 pounds! He has only recently began limping some, likely from jumping down from roosts and incessanty chasing hens, and so he will unfortunately end up in the freezer as well. Otherwise, not one of the other chickens had any leg issues at all, and the few losses we had were accidental, save for one that dropped dead for no obvious reason at 9 weeks. They all were very meaty, tender, and tasted fabulous, customers were delighted and increased their orders this year. Just order 150 more- you will not be disappointed with these birds!"

Good experience raising and eating these
"We butchered our rangers at 11 weeks, with none dressing at less than 5#, and some up over 7# dressed weight. They remained vigorous, calm, and thrifty, and continued to forage in the pasture even at those high weights. They never got any medicated feed or other medication, and never got sick. Very easy birds to manage, and beautiful to look at. And they are delicious and meaty."

4-H Broiler chicks
"We ordered (50) chicks for my 3 kids' 4-H broiler chicks. They arrived last Friday and are doing great. I am so anxious to see how they do. We only have 7 weeks to get them up to a minimum of 4 pounds (max. of 7 lbs.). Everyone in our county orders from one hatchery and gets cornish rock X's. We didn't want cornish rocks and my sister has ordered from JM Hatchery in the past and been very pleased, so we thought we would give it a try. It's only been 3 days now, but they're doing great and we haven't lost any of them - despite the fact that we have 2 Jack Russell dogs who would love to have a few for a meal. I'll have to post again later to let you know how they did at the county fair. It's August 14th. If we win, I'm sure that everyone will want to know where we got them from."

Colored Broilers
"Our first batch of the colored broilers was super!! Butchered them on June 8th (9 weeks) and they ended up 4-6.5 pounds dressed weight. I actually moved the butcher date up a week as they were looking really big. We used a day range system, electric poultry netting moved daily, with additional 23% free feeding them all during the day only. Looking forward to using these chicks again next year. I was very pleasantly surprised especially after growing cornish cross for many years with mixed results and birds with unsound legs. We only lost 3! That includes shipping, brooding, grow-out, and transporting to processor. Keep up the good work."

farmer
"These are the best broilers! I just sent 50 out of my order of 100 to the processor and at only 9 weeks, they were in the 4-5 dressed weight range. No losses at all from illness or unthriftiness (my german shepard got a couple, dad burn it). 2 developed leg problems, but recovered without having to be culled. Great choice for a free range/pastured setting. Getting ready to order 100 more to keep up with demand! Thanks JM hatchery staff!"

Amazed
"I cannot say enough good things about the colored range broilers! What a pleasant and amazing difference than the typical hybrid meat birds. They are everything you claimed, and so much more! Ellen"

Nice order of birds
"All 102 arrived in wonderful condition three weeks ago. They are growing vigorously, with only one loss due to an accident -- no unthrifty birds. They are gaining nicely, and are active and attractive, feathering out appropriately. Will go out onto range next week (mid-May). I will be holding on to a couple of them to join the laying flock, just because I like the way they look. Thank you for making these birds available in the US market!"

Colored Range Chicks 1 week
"The 102 chicks arrived on time and were extremely vigorous even after their trans-continental journey. They took right to food and water, running and scratching in their litter immediately. We're really looking forward to July when they go for processing."
